Relationship between road quality and environmental parameters.An Internet of Things (IoT) Use Case


Our research objective is to use data visualisation techniques to comment on the usability of the sensor data collected by the motorbike fitted with sensors to be able to give insightful information.

To achieve our research objective, we have broken it down into few research questions. Since the data is on vehicle parameters and environmental parameters, we first want to explore the road quality and air quality of the towns through which the motorbike travelled.

Our primary research question is as follows:

•Exploration of road quality, pollution level and the speed of the motorbike based on different towns through which the motorbike travelled.

•Does Road Quality affects the environmental, i.e. causes poor air quality or environmental pollution

Our project revolved around the experimentation of the industry use of IoT in daily life proactively. Therefore, it was a considerably new concept. It is today, a novel way to collect data on environmental pollution and road quality through sensors fitted in cars/motorbikes. We would also like to state that the feasibility of such use cases is less as this is still in the experimental PoC (Proof of Concept) phase. That handed over to us a set of limitations in terms of gaining generic insights from the visualisations we created.

Conclusion


Within the constraints of our data, which has been collected only for a day, we can say that there is an indication that road quality has an effect on pollution.


Most towns with good road quality shown a low level of environmental pollution, for example, in the case of Poznan, Zlotniki,Kobylniki, Sady, Napachanie, and Swadzim.This result is very much promising in the case of the towns Zlotniki and Sady.


However, to reach a definitive conclusion, it is extremely necessary to observe daily results from the sensor data, at least for more than one month. It is very much possible to use IoT advancements to conduct this experiment in order to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between road quality and pollution. We could use the sensor data to gain valuable insights but we refrain from making a general statement because our data was only for one day.
